Ramadan: The Gates Are Open, the Devils Are Chained — What Does This Really Mean?

During Ramadan, something wonderful happens, the gates of Heaven are open wide. But what does this mean, and how can we explain this to our children? The Gates of Heaven are Open? God’s blessings are all around us during Ramadan, even more than usual. It’s as if the gates to goodness are wide open, just waiting for us to step through. The Devils are Chained!? In the special month of Ramadan, the devils are chained, meaning they are restrained and unable to spread mischief as they normally do. This gives us the opportunity to do extra good and focus on what truly matters, with fewer distractions. ⛓ But if the devils are locked up, why do bad things still happen? 🤔 Let’s break it down: Understanding Hierarchy While the high-ranking devil commanders are restrained, their junior foot soldiers are still out and about.😡 Plus, people still choose to make poor choices, leading to bad things happening. Choosing Goodness With the biggest and baddest devils restrained, their influence weakens. This means fewer distractions and more opportunities to do good. Embracing the Opportunity During Ramadan, let’s make the most of this opportunity by embracing the goodness and strengthening ourselves, so when the evil mischief-makers are out in full force, we’ll be better prepared to stay on track and resist their distractions. Helping Kids See Prayer as Part of the Conversation

Some of my favourite moments with my children aren’t big days out or special events. They’re the little chats in the car, the quick “Guess what happened!” stories during dinner, and the silly giggles over nothing. Our children’s connection with God can grow in exactly the same way, through sharing special moments and small, everyday conversations. It’s the little moments that build up over time: 🙏 A thank you, 🐈 A sense of awe at something amazing He’s made, 💬 Or a whispered “please help” in a tricky moment. And the best part? These moments are already happening every day, in the car, in the kitchen, walking home from school. We can simply bring God into them by talking to Him out loud together. For example: 🍽 While cooking dinner together: “God, please help this turn out well.” And when it’s ready: “Thank You, God — You always take care of us.” 🐱 Spotting a Cute Cat: “God, You make the most adorable animals.” 😢 When Your Child is Upset: “God, You’re the only one who truly understands how we feel… even when we can’t find the words.” When we speak to God like this, we show our children that He’s someone we can check in with at any time, just like a close friend who’s always there for us. And that’s the point. It’s a friendship. A real relationship. 💕 One made extraordinary by who it’s with — our Loving Lord. When children get used to talking to God like this, something wonderful happens: Prayer (salah) starts to feel like part of that same conversation, a time when they keep talking to Him, recognising how truly wonderful He is, and asking Him for guidance. 💡 Something to Try This Week Pick one everyday moment with your child, a laugh, a challenge, something amazing you see and ‘chat’ to God out loud together. Keep it short, simple, and natural. When they see you doing this, it helps them see God as close, caring, and always there. And when they understand salah, that closeness grows even more. Helping Kids Imagine Paradise

Have you ever told your child, “In Paradise you can have anything you want,” only to realise they find it hard to imagine what that really means? 🤔 For many kids, it’s not that they don’t believe it, it’s that they don’t know what to wish for, or how to picture it in a way that feels real and exciting. And without that spark of excitement, it’s harder to nurture a true longing for it. That’s why God gives us glimpses of Paradise in the Qur’an 📖✨ fruits, honey, gardens, couches, pearls, and good company to help us relate, ponder, and spark excitement and longing for it.. Here’s how you could bring those Qur’anic descriptions of Paradise to life in a way your child can imagine and get excited about: 😎 Perfect Days Every day feels just right. Nice warm weather, with a gentle breeze to keep you cool and fresh. People are chilling on the comfiest couches, laughing and chatting with those they love. No bad moods, no arguments, no unkind words, just peace, kindness, and good vibes in the most beautiful and luxurious surroundings. 😋 Unlimited Treats God mentions fruits and honey. In ancient times, these were the sweetest treats the people living then could imagine. For us today, think of fruit and cake, ice cream, bubble tea… all tasting more delicious than anything we’ve ever tasted. They’ll never run out, and no one will ever say, “That’s enough now!” 💎 Looking Amazing God tells us in the Qur’an that people will be adorned with pearls and fine garments. No one has to chase after expensive brands or the latest styles. In Paradise, everyone looks crisp, fresh, glowing, and their very best. 😍 Familiar Yet Better And here’s something else God tells us: In Paradise, everything will be stunning, grand, and incredibly beautiful. But some things will also feel familiar. The very things you once wished for in this life will be there, only far more amazing and waaaay better than you ever imagined. And above all, we’ll be truly close to God, the greatest joy of all. It’s everything we’ve ever longed for, and more. ✨ Joy Without End Unlike this life, where good things and fun times get cut short, nothing in Paradise ever has to end. No tiredness. No bedtime. No limits. The joy just keeps going. In this life, screen time ends, playtime finishes, and even the best days have to stop when we’re tired. That frustration and disappointment simply won’t exist in Paradise. ♥️ Sharing these images with our children makes it feel more relatable and exciting, helping them long for it. It’s also a chance to remind them that God is most loving and generous. His promises are true. He wants to bring us closer to Him and give us all this and more. How to Explain Qadr to Your Child – in a way that make sense

Divine Decree (Qadr), where everything is already known and written by God, is one of the foundations of our faith. But it can feel like one of the hardest to explain. How do we help our children understand what it means without it feeling confusing or scary? 🤔 In a recent Our Muslim Kids online class, we explored this tricky topic using something children already love and understand: online games. 💻 We talked about how every game has a designer — the programmer who builds the game world, sets the rules, and codes all the possible paths. 🎮 But the player still makes choices, deciding where to go, how to react, and what to do. This helped the children understand that: ✅ God is the Ultimate Designer – everything in life is already known and perfectly preordained. ✅ We still hold the controller – our choices matter and shape the direction we take. ✅ Other people’s actions affect us too – just like in a multiplayer game. ✅ Qadr doesn’t mean we’re not responsible – it means God sees everything and gives us the space to grow, choose, and prove ourselves. 📖✨ To help link this to the Qur’an, we explored this powerful verse: This helped children understand that Divine Decree (Qadr) isn’t something to fear, it’s a sign of God’s perfect knowledge, wisdom, and care.♥️ Want to talk about Qadr with your child too? Here are two simple ways to start the conversation: 🗨️ “You know how in a game, the whole game world has already been designed, but you still make choices about what to do? That’s like life. God knows everything, but you still get to choose who you become.” 🗨️ “If your life were a game, what kind of avatar are you becoming?” Kind? Brave? Helpful? (Just a fun way to get them thinking.) Tip: The next time your child asks to play an online game, try gently steering the conversation to link it back to God, the One who designed all the paths, but still gives us the power to choose. These are the kinds of meaningful conversations I love sparking, helping children understand their faith in a way that feels real, relevant, and full of love for God. What Is Worship, Exactly?

Children are often told that we must worship God. But do they really understand what that means — or more importantly, why? 🤔 Without understanding the why, it’s hard for worship to feel meaningful or motivating. One of the easiest ways to help children understand and appreciate worship is to relate it to something they already know and value: friendship. But not just any friendship — the most special one of all: their friendship with God. 💕 The One Who: ✨ Helps us in ways no one else ever can ✨ Always wants to hear from us ✨ Understands us completely ✨ Loves us and wants the best for us This friendship is like no other — and we need it. God is the Most Perfect Friend So this relationship deserves our extra thought, time, and care. It comes before all others. Just like with any important friendship, we must show God how much we value Him and what kind of good friend we are, by: 💕 Talking to Him 💕 Thinking about what He says and loves 💕 Showing up when invited (prayer) 💕 Making time for Him — even when we’re busy Our efforts to prioritise, maintain, and grow this special relationship are worship. When children begin to see worship through this lens, something shifts. It moves from duty to connection and suddenly, it’s about much more than just rituals. Worship becomes a way of staying close to God, nurturing a relationship built on love, trust, and understanding. If God is so kind, why doesn’t He just make everyone Muslim?

A child asked me this question in a recent class, and it’s one many children (and even adults) quietly wonder about too. What Being Muslim Really Means When children ask, “Why doesn’t God just make everyone Muslim?” It’s an opportunity to answer a deeper question: what does Muslim actually mean? 🤔 Being Muslim isn’t just something we are; it’s something we do. It isn’t just a label we carry or an identity we inherit. It’s a way of being, and a choice we should renew every day.  You Can Help Your Child Understand it Like This If you made someone say “I love you,” it wouldn’t feel true. But when someone chooses to say it on their own, because they truly mean it, that’s what makes it special.💖 And that’s the kind of love God wants from us, sincere, willing, that shows our love for Him is genuine and real. Why God Lets Us Choose If God wanted, He could make everyone believe and submit to Him instantly. But He chose not to, because He doesn’t want to force anyone to love or obey Him. God wants our love to be genuine, to come from understanding and choice, not fear or control. The Gift and Responsibility of Choice God has given us the ability to think, decide, and choose, hoping we’ll use those gifts wisely. He fills our lives with blessings and reminders of His kindness, power, and wisdom, helping guide us toward making the best choices. We live in His Kingdom, using and enjoying what He provides, so He completely deserves our love and appreciation. When we offer and show our love to Him willingly, He appreciates and responds to that love. He loves the love. This is Why God Doesn’t Force Belief Love, trust, and submission must be chosen, and this is where God’s kindness shines so clearly. ♥️ He gives people time. ♥️ He sends signs. ♥️ He offers constant reminders and opportunities. He never stops inviting us to know Him, follow His way, and return to Him. To choose to willingly love, trust, and submit to God with sincerity and gratitude. To choose to notice His signs, respond to His guidance, put Him first, and try to live in a way that brings about and reflects His goodness on earth. May God fill our hearts, and our children’s hearts, with love for Him, and help us keep choosing Him willingly and lovingly, every day. 💕 Ayesha Our Muslim Kids (OMK) Want more child-friendly faith resources like this? → Get free OMK guides + articles here
